Jim Pratt is one of the best known and most sought after winegrowers on the North Coast, a distinction earned from more than 30 years as a leader in the wine community as nurseryman, grower and advisor to some of the best known wineries on the Sonoma Coast.
His Cornerstone Certified Vineyards owns or manages 220 acres in the Russian River and emerging Sebastopol Hills growing regions. He planted his first vineyard (Irwin Lane) in 1988 after graduating from Humboldt State and working at the Sonoma Grapevine nursery.
More than half his planted vines are Pinot Noir, and more than 60 acres are registered budwood blocks, and he offers both rootstock and certified budwood cuttings. Though he has earned a stellar reputation for providing the highest quality Pinot Noir grapes, his vineyards also include plantings of Chardonnay, Merlot, Pinot Gris, Viognier and Dolcetto. The vineyards he manages for clients range from two to 40 acres.
As an Adjunct Instructor at the Santa Rosa Junior College, he influences future winegrowers enrolled in the agricultural program, and has helped raised more than $500,000 for the SRJC Shone Farm. An avid diver, it’s no surprise that his favorite wine and food pairing is Pinot Noir and Abalone, freshly caught.
