Tom Hyland is a Chicago-based freelance wine writer, educator and photographer. He specializes in Italian wines, having traveled to wine regions across that country during more than 65 visits.
His first book on Italian wines, Beyond Barolo and Brunello: Italy’s Most Distinctive Wines, was published in 2013. His second book, The Wines and Foods of Piemonte, was published in 2016. This book is divided into two parts, with the first being an overview of the region’s wines, while the second contains one-on-one interviews with dozens of Piemonte’s finest winemakers, producers and chefs.
He has been writing about Italian wines for numerous publications for eighteen years; he is currently a contributor on Italian wines to Decanter in England and is a regular contributor to wine-searcher.com.
He has been conducting seminars for the trade on Italian wines for more than a decade, working with various consorzie and marketing groups, including the Italian Trade Commission. He is currently the US ambassador for the consorzio, I Vini del Piemonte, having conducted wine dinners in various cities.
He is also an accomplished photographer, and is represented by Cephas Picture Library. His images have been featured in several wine books and publications, including Decanter.
