For the first time since 2019, SommCon returned to Washington, DC and the energy in the room reminded us exactly why we came back. Over the course of two powerful days, buyers and sommeliers from across the East Coast gathered to connect, learn, taste, and tackle the questions shaping the future of the industry.

Curated to be a more intimate setting than our flagship conference in San Diego, the energy of the Summit was dynamic. From first-time attendees to veteran buyers and educators, the sentiment was clear: the East Coast community is ready for more. SommCon DC served as both a catalyst and a preview of what’s to come as we work toward building a full-scale conference return to the region in 2026.

Day one opened with a candid Buyer’s Roundtable, where leaders discussed what makes the DC market so uniquely positioned for growth. The tone was honest and collaborative, setting the stage for the day’s deeper explorations. From there, attendees dove into how water elevates food and wine pairings during an interactive (and eye-opening) tasting with S.Pellegrino and Acqua Panna. Attendees then explored the nuanced world of Maryland and Virginia wines, celebrating minimal intervention and the region’s distinct approach to winemaking. It was a day of insight, exchange, and a powerful reminder that this community is just getting started.

Curated by our partners at The SOMM Journal, day two offered a full-spectrum look at what shapes the wines we know and love. Technique or Terroir sparked discussion on whether a wine’s identity comes from the vineyard or winery – with a pour of Wine Spectator’s 2022 Wine of the Year, Chateau St. Jean Cinq Cépages, as a highlight. Over lunch, Taylor Fladgate’s elegant still wines and Ports brought attendees together for lively dialogue and standout sips. The day wrapped with Wine Quality and Character, a session on brand identity and market trends that challenge professionals to balance authenticity with adaptability.

Across both days, the common thread was clear – this industry is better when the community gathers. SommCon DC created space for real connection and real learning, and we’re only getting started.

“SommCon DC Summit was a wonderful experience and a pleasant surprise. As a first-time attendee, I learned so much – from insightful panel discussions on industry trends to a memorable water tasting that completely changed how I think about pairing water with food. The programming was thoughtful, well-executed, and engaging. I also enjoyed having the opportunity to connect with professionals and enthusiasts from this industry. I left feeling inspired, more informed, and excited to continue exploring the world of wine!”
