My journey (Laura Algieri) at SommCon 2023 was an extraordinary odyssey that transformed my burgeoning career in the wine industry. As a recipient of The Emerging Leader Scholarship, I was granted access to a world of unparalleled opportunities. The scholarship not only defrayed the conference expenses but also provided mentorship and guidance that propelled me forward.

One of the most significant experiences was taking the WSET Level 1 Award in Sake Exam, an endeavor I had long aspired to. Immersed in a classroom of aspiring sommeliers and sake enthusiasts, I delved into the intricacies of Japanese rice wine, its history, production methods, and flavors. The exam tested my knowledge and refined my understanding, culminating in a triumphant pass. This accomplishment not only broadened my knowledge of sake but also equipped me with the skills to better serve our guests at Lucky Cat by Gordon Ramsay, an Asian eating house in Miami Beach.

Beyond the classroom, I was fortunate to connect with an esteemed mentor who recognized my passion for wine writing. Their guidance and encouragement led to the publication of my first published article about my wine harvest experience in The Tasting Panel, a prestigious wine magazine. This accomplishment opened doors to further opportunities, including an invitation to the Wine Writers Symposium in Napa, where I mingled with renowned winemakers, critics, and fellow writers.

SommCon 2023 proved to be a transformative catalyst in my career. The Emerging Leader Scholarship granted me access to a wealth of knowledge, networking opportunities, and mentorship that would have otherwise been beyond my reach. It ignited my passion for wine education and propelled me towards a future filled with endless possibilities.

In addition to the educational benefits, SommCon 2023 provided me with invaluable networking opportunities. I was able to connect with sommeliers from all over the country, sharing insights, experiences, and ideas. These connections have proven to be a valuable resource, as I continue to grow and develop in my career.

As the Restaurant Operations Manager at Lucky Cat by Gordon Ramsay, I am grateful for the opportunity to apply my newfound knowledge from SommCon in both my personal and professional life.
